Project Title

Regional analysis of Soviet agricultural development, its natural determinants and changes in its ability to support the population, 1880-2000.

Project Summary

This project will enable us to better assess the historical developments of this turbulent period and possible future developments. It aims at overcoming the lack of comparable regional data to provide a regional analysis of Soviet agricultural development through some of its most dynamic and critical years (famines, wars and collectivization). It combines the use of new archival materials with sophisticated GIS techniques to analyse the relationship between regional agricultural performance, the natural phenomena that influenced performance and the effects of regional performance and state procurement policy in producing regional scarcity and reduced regional food supplies.
