Biography:

Robyn Bartel completed her undergraduate Bachelor of Science (Honours)/ Bachelor of Laws degree at the Australian National University (Canberra) in 1997.

Robyn has performed work for the Quaternary Climate Database. Robyn's Honours thesis concerned remotely sensed lineaments and Tertiary Volcanism on the Great Divide near Goulburn, New South Wales. For this work and previous Robyn received the University Medal in Geography in 1997.

Honours Abstract:

Cenozoic lavafield basalts in eastern Australia are thought to have been extruded where the lithosphere was under tension. Previous studies have related volcanics to lineaments apparent in Landsat imagery, without determining the nature of the lineaments on the ground. Landsat TM imagery of the Great Divide near Goulburn in south-central New South Wales shows that lineaments are a common feature of such imagery, even in areas where the geology is rarely exposed at the surface. Several lineaments identify previously mapped geological and soil boundaries but no lineaments coincident with basalt lavafields identify any topographic features suggestive of tectonic activity associated with this extrusion. Strong field evidence however exists which suggests that the lavafields were extruded from vents along the divide. These vents are presently preserved as high elevation features. The conclusion of previous workers that the area has remained relatively stable since the early Tertiary is challenged by seismic records and the Lake George Fault, which truncates the lavafields.
