The Korrong
is a semi-submersible vessel that is owned and operated by the Department
of Geomatics.
The Korrong has been used extensively in studies within Port Phillip Bay, and has been used by other research orgnisations for work along the southern coastline and the Gipsland Lakes. The vessel has a viewing port which submersible viewing port, which can descend to one metre below the water's surface. This enables research to be conducted without surface effects such as light scattering. The viewing port has windows for capturing video data with either vertical or oblique geometry, making it suitable for seafloor mapping along with qualitative analysis of the benthic habitat. The vertical views have an ideal mapping geometry, therefore are used for quantification of the data.
