The distinction between land cover and land use information : Investigation of mapping land information using high-resolution satellite imagery

Student: Nicola Horacek

Supervisors: Dr. Joe Leach & Bob Itami

Abstract: The existing Victorian state-wide geographic information base is available at a scale of 1:250,000. This has been visually interpreted from Landsat Thematic Mapper data, containing only 10 land use / land cover categories. This kind of broad scale information does not contain sufficient detail to support natural resource management at a sub-regional or local level. Therefore to meet environmental land management issues, the Department of Natural Resources and Environment (DNRE) have proposed the development of a land use map of Victoria, at a scale of 1:25,000 by utilizing the high-resolution imagery (1-m ground resolution) collected by the IKONOS2 satellite. An analysis of the capabilities of this high-resolution imaging system, and comparison to existing satellite imaging systems (Landsat TM and SPOT) for the representation and extraction of land use data will be presented.
