ScalesIn order to present survey information on a plan it is necessary to select an appropriate scale, one that is acceptable and that will show the data at the largest possible scale for the piece of drawing media. A table of acceptable scales is shown attached, generally scales are based on multiples of ten times 10, 5, 2.5 and 2. To select the appropriate scale the largest dimension in both Northing and Easting is tested at various scale ratios against the allowable drawing space on the plan,. The largest scale that will permit all the data to be plotted is then selected, and an appropriate point selected as the origin of the plot. The Plotted ScaleA bar scale is always plotted on the plan, it will allow the scale of a copy to be determined even if there has been an enlargement or reduction in size during the copy process.
The natural scale of the plan is also shown, but naturally this becomes misleading if the plan has been rescaled. The natural scale of the plan is the ratio of a distance on the plan to its true distance on the ground, and is usually expressed in the form 1:x.
