Biography
Dr Joseph Leach gained his Ph.D. from the University of Melbourne
in 1984 with a thesis on the geomorphology of the north polar
region of Mars, completed as part of a guest investigation for
NASA's Viking program. Since then he has worked as an intelligence
officer with the RAAF, a research scientist with the CSIRO (Division
of Geomechanics), and as head of the Remote Sensing Unit at
the (now) University of Ballarat. In 1994 he took up his current
position as lecturer in remote sensing in the Dept of Geomatics.
His major research interest lies in developing techniques to
better map the sea floor environment and to do this he has developed
a semi-submersible imaging vessel, the Korrong. He is a Victorian Council member of the Australian Marine Science Association.
