World Teach Program
Volunteers
 |
It's early morning and I am on the way to school.
As I'm slowly walking down the soi (street), thinking
about my lesson plans for the day I realise that I am
smiling. On both sides of the soi, vendors are already
selling an amazing array of food. From fresh pineapples
to pig entrails, spicy noodles to delectable sweets. And
straight ahead of me orange-robes monks, barefoot on
alms-round, receiving the merits of the neighbourhood
people. This is a daily scene that is a million miles
from everything that I have ever known. It is a fringe
benefit to my job as a World teach Thailand volunteer... |
So What is World Teach?
We are an international non-government organisation based at
Harvard University. We promote international development and
cultural exchange through English language education.
Specifically we place North Americans in countries that have
requested assistance, like Thailand. The World teach/Thailand
program commenced in 1989. It is affiliated with PDA, and to date
more than 300 people have volunteered in the Thailand program.
Occasionally, one or two volunteers serve in non-teaching
positions with PDA.
| World Teach gave me the chance to teach others,
and to learn about myself. I was able to contribute in a
meaningful way, to see the world, and in short, to have
one of the greatest experiences in my life |
