Ever since Mechai Viravaidya began his family planning campaigns in the 1970s, one of his main objectives was to attract media coverage as an effective tool in changing society's values, particularly with respect to taboo subjects such as sex, birth control, contraception, vasectomies and now abortion.

Media coverage in the Southeast Asian region has also been an outlet for publicising PDA's successes and major events. Local coverage in Thailand is also extensive for both English and Thai language media. PDA has recently produced a 15min program shown every week on Thai television Channel 11. Coverage in Thai print media is also significant with regular features about rural development projects, especially the Vegetable Bank initiative. | ![]() |

The Population and Community Development Association has at times attracted world wide attention and Khun Mechai is recognised as Thailand's greatest world ambassador, serving on numerous international committees and more recently as International Ambassador for UNAIDS. In 1997 Mechai was awarded the United nations Population Award for his contribution to global family planning and population control. | ![]() |

In the English language media the TBIRD project has received global coverage, especially for the shoe factory village in Buri Ram province, which has attracted a lot of international interest (see The New York Times). "Thailand's first international business daily", the Business Day newspaper, has provided a forum for social comment regarding the whole scope of issues ranging from AIDS, rural development, philanthropy, health, prisons, religion and democracy. |
