CBIRD was the name given to the initial integrated rural development projects, and like many successful ventures soon out grew the working title. As the name implies, the programs actively involved the rural village community in the development process, the programs were designed to empower local people by providing them with improved economic, social, medical and environmental conditions. The acronym CBIRD is now used at PDA to describe the regional Centres of PDA, as many of the activities that take place in these centres are part of other programs like TBIRD, the Vegetable Banks, International Training Programs and so on.
A great variety of activities and programs are operated both at, and out of, the CBIRD Centre at Nang Rong, on the main highway from Bangkok to Ubon Ratchathani and the land crossing into Lao at Chong Mek. These programs range from the well established to the new and innovative, the CBIRD Centre is often used as the trialing ground for projects such as rammed earth building techniques, environmental gardens, water treatment with effective micro-bacteria and so on.
