The Asian Centre

for Population and Community Development

The Asian Centre for Population and Community Development was established in 1978 as the international training arm of PDA. The training activities were funded initially by the Pathfinder Fund, and the Japanese Organisation for International Cooperation in Family Planning (JOICFP). Since 1979, the Netherlands Government has become the major funding body.

ACPD is the only training institute of its kind in Thailand or Asia that offers training and study tours on the community based development approach of integrating family planning, health, income generation and other rural development programs. All of the courses are geared towards practical applications so that participants can implement similar programs in their own countries

Course 3 Description:

Program participants will be presented with various strategies for integrating family planning, health and community development. Participants will learn to identify crucial points to consider in the design, implementation and management of integrated community based family planning, STD and HIV prevention and development programs. In addition, participants will learn to investigate appropriate management techniques that can be utilised for more efficient and effective community-based family planning health and development program implementation. There will be many opportunities to observe activities administered by the Royal Thai Government and by NGOs in both urban and rural areas of Thailand.

Course 4 Description

Putting into practice the concept of gender sensitivity has become a top priority. This course assesses the current status of women in developing countries in order to effectively design and implement programs sensitive to their unique needs. It also identifies and analyses problems and constraints in managing women's problems and explores ways to alleviate these problems. The course will bring together people involved in and or directly responsible for activities which promote the empowerment of women in community development, reproductive health and fertility management. Group discussions of experiences and needs are a valuable component of the course. Participants will be exposed to new concepts and will be encouraged to examine, adapt, formulate and manage existing or new programs more creatively.

Course 5 Description

The Advanced training of trainers course focuses on experienced trainers and program managers who design and implement training programs for institutions dealing with family planning, health and development programs. The course allows participants to develop their own training skills further and at the same time give them the techniques that can help them teach such skills to others. participants will practice teaching and designing training programs and master principles of evaluating existing training programs. They will also learn to plan and produce training media.

Course 6 Description

Participants will discover ways in which the corporate sector can be mobilised to assist in rural development efforts. This 2 week course will identify the factors, skills, knowledge and resources that are crucial to the success of projects in rural villages, implemented with assistance from organisations from the corporate sector. PDA's TBIRD program was established in 1985 to leverage diverse company resources in projects that were designed, implemented, monitored and evaluated by the sponsoring company. PDA has contacted over 150 companies so far to participate in this program, and the course will give participants opportunities to observe successful projects already under way in rural Thailand.
