Structure of a Masters by Research Degree

All candidates for the Masters by Research Degree will be examined on the basis of their thesis. A candidate will have appropriately experienced supervisor/s and an Advisory Committee who in consultation with the candidate, arranges a course of supervised research designed to suit the individual requirements and interests of the candidate. A candidate may be required to supplement their research program by attendance at, or enrolment in, additional subjects if considered necessary by the supervisor(s).

What is a Masters leading to PhD in the Melbourne School of Engineering?

In some cases a student may be offered a Masters leading to PhD.  This means that a student begins their research degree as a Masters student and when a student has completed approximately 12 months of study they apply to convert to a PhD degree.  The PhD candidature will normally be regarded as a continuation of the same program of study, and the PhD commencement date will be backdated to the commencement date of the Master's degree.  Students who successfully convert to a PhD Degree will become Confirmed PhD Candidates.  The conversion process from Masters to PhD is a very similar process to the Confirmation process that all PhD students must complete 12 months into their study.  Some Departments in the Melbourne School of Engineering usually offer most students applying to commence a degree the Masters leading to PhD.
