2007 Licensed Surveyors

The Department of Geomatics congratulates the following graduates on becoming licensed surveyors in Victoria:

COSIT'07

The Conference on Spatial Information Theory (COSIT'07) was held in Melbourne on 19 - 23 September. The event was a great success with more participants and the most competitive paper selection process than ever before. It attracted participants who engaged in intense discussions, even during the evenings, and feedback from the attendees was described as 'only excitement'.

The COSIT conference series has been shaping and leading the interdisciplinary research in theoretical GIScience for years and generally takes place in Europe or the US. COSIT'07 was an unique chance for participants from Australia/Pacific to meet all the distinguished researchers in this field, and this opportunity was taken up by a number of students from our two departments.

The proceedings, lecture notes and photos are now available online.

BGeomE accredited by Royal Institution of Chartered Surveyors

The Royal Institution of Chartered Surveyors has recently accredited the Unversity of Melbourne's Bachelor of Geomatics for students entering in 2006 & 2007. The Institution is also currently considering the University's new Professional Graduate Degree, the Master of Engineering (Geomatics), for accreditation.

The RICS stated: 'This recognition achieved by the Department of Geomatics is highly significant. It will provide recognition and mobility for the Department's graduates globally - at a time when land, property and construction markets are now truly international. RICS is the world's largest professional body for land and property professionals with 130,000 Members working in 120 countries. The Department's graduates will be eligible to qualify as 'Chartered Geomatics' professionals and hold the letters 'MRICS' after their name. The RICS sets very high standards for its University Partners and I am delighted that the Dept of Geomatics has met and exceeded these standards.'

Australasian Hydrographic Societies 2006 Education Award

PhD student Nathan Daw Quadros has been awarded the Australasian Hydrographic Societies (AHS) 2006 Education Award. Nathan is undertaking research in an effort to establish a marine cadastre to make the definition and management of areas in the tidal interface a more certain and consistent task.

Inaugural Spatial Industry Careers Night

The Melbourne University Geomatics Students club (MUGS) in association with the RMIT Geospatial Science Student’s Association (GSSA) ran the Inaugural Spatial Industry Careers Night on May 2nd for students of Melbourne University and RMIT who are currently studying Spatial Science Degrees.

In all, 34 companies were in attendance, ranging from Surveying; GIS; Software and Hardware sales and development; Cartography; Photogrammetry and Aerial Photography; Local Councils; State Government Departments; Multi-Discipline Organisations and also Federal Services. There were also several professional institutions in attendance: Consulting Surveyors Victoria; Institution of Surveyors Victoria; Mapping Sciences Institute of Australia; RMIT; Spatial Sciences Institute; Surveyors Registration Board of Victoria and the University of Melbourne.

This event gave students an opportunity to discuss potential work opportunities – both graduate and vacation – with spatial industry companies; as well as provide industry representatives present on the night with some scope of what interests, ambitions and lifestyles today’s Spatial Science Students are looking at obtaining from their future careers.

Around 300 students collectively from Melbourne University and RMIT were in attendance and helped make the night a huge success. A large amount of positive feedback has been provided by students and the industry representatives, who are looking forward to attending the event next year.
