CGISM: About us

The Centre is a joint initiative of the Faculty of Engineering (Department of Geomatics) and the Faculty of Architecture, Building and Planning at the University of Melbourne. The Centre has been established to carry out research on geographic information systems, their applications, environmental visualisation and modelling, and to provide a focus for University teaching in these areas.

Teaching

The Centre offers a Graduate Certificate (1 semester) and Graduate Diploma (2 semesters)in GIS and a Master of Applied Science(GIS) degree (3 semesters - by coursework or by research). These programs are designed to give professionals working in many fields, in Government or in Private enterprise, a working knowledge of the theory and range of applications of geographic information systems. The Centre also offers numerous short courses aimed at continuing professional development.

Consultancy

The diverse consultancy activites of the Centre include:

  • Draft specifications for Victoria and New South Wales state road network data bases
  • GIS and visualisation support for highway alignment and design
  • GIS support for regional strategy planning
  • Analysis of data base options
  • Urban development - visual analysis and simulation
  • Visual and recreational modelling for forest management
  • Accuracy analysis of spatial data products
  • Transmission line impact modelling
