About Us

Geomatics is the science and technologies of three dimensional measurement, mapping and visualisation

Head of Department Welcome

The Department has received international acknowledgment as a Centre of Excellence in Land Information Studies and this reputation is enhanced by the Centre for Geographic Information Systems & Modelling (CGISM) - a joint initiative between the Faculty of Engineering (Department of Geomatic Engineering) and the Faculty of Architecture, Building & Planning. CGISM resides within the Department of Geomatic Engineering and is directed by Professor Ian Bishop.

The Department of Geomatic Engineering has an established reputation for excellence in teaching and research in three key disciplines: measurement science; land management and administration; and spatial information science and technology. This reputation was confirmed in 1998 by an international review panel which rated the Department to be in the top ten of its type in the world. In 2003 the Department was central to the formation of the Cooperative Research Centre for Spatial Information (CRC-SI). It is the site for the CRC headquarters and leads three of the five research programs.

Who We Are

We do world leading research in the expanding discipline of Geomatics and provide a friendly yet challenging educational environment for undergraduate and postgraduate students.

Department Background

The Department of Geomatics has evolved from the Department of Surveying, which was established in 1949 although surveying has been taught in the University since 1861. The new name encompasses the broad scope of modern measurement science, land information science and spatial data management.

Today the Department is a thriving centre and educates students from a wide range of backgrounds in all of the Geomatic disciplines to prepare them for a satisfying Geomatic career.

Joint Initiatives

In conjunction with colleagues from the University of New South Wales, Curtin University and Charles Sturt University, the Department is host institution to the Collaborative Research Centre in Spatial Information (CRC-SI). Core industry partners in the CRC included the Commonwealth, New South Wales, Victorian and West Australian Governments. The private sector is represented through a consortium of over 40 private firms from the spatial information industry. The CRC has been funded for 7 years commencing in 2003 and will pursue research projects in all areas of spatial information within its mission to develop Virtual Australia.

The Department in association with the Faculty of Architecture, Building and Planning at the University of Melbourne provides The Centre of Geographic Information Systems and Modelling, which carries out research on geographic information systems, their applications, environmental visualisation and modelling, and to provide a focus for University teaching in these areas.
