The Compass is a very simple instrument for measuring horizontal angles at minimal precision and accuracy. Used in conjunction with a Clinometer, a Compass is useful for GPS 'mission planning' - estimating the direction of obstructions (relative to the GPS station) to satellite visibility such as a building or other feature.
